Illuminating the Wall will begin at dusk with an exciting public event at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend, North Tyneside. At 5.15pm a stunning theatrical performance by Berlin based Theater Anu will help to launch the Line of Light. Theater Anu took part in the celebrations for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall last autumn. In their performance at Segedunum, angels will appear round the ruins of the fort as the skies grow dark. The first light will then be illuminated at 5.45pm as the Line of Light starts its epic journey westwards, to reach the Cumbrian coast around one hour later.

As the light makes its way across the country Carlisle will be preparing to ‘welcome the light’, as it arrives in Cumbria. Led by the stirring sounds of street band Tongues of Fire and impressive fiery engines (from Pandeamonium) and lit by thousands of flickering flames, a parade of costumed characters and musicians will follow the elusive and beautiful airborne Heliosphere through the streets of Carlisle to greet the line of light. But this will be a parade with a difference as the participants will be you – carrying flaming wax torches and dressed to Glow! This Illuminating Hadrian’s Wall event is brought to you by our partner on this project Lakes Alive.
